THE ONE THING : THE SURPRISINGLY SIMPLE TRUTH BEHIND EXTRAORDINARY RESULTS

"The One Thing," Keller and co-author Jay Papasan present a compelling case for why focusing on one thing can transform your life. The book offers a practical framework for identifying the one thing that matters most in any given situation and provides actionable tips for achieving greater productivity and success.

If you try to do too many things at once, you will not be successful in achieving any of them.

[This is because dividing your attention and resources between multiple goals can lead to a lack of focus and a dilution of effort, resulting in lower-quality work and decreased productivity.]

The authors present a simple framework for identifying one thing, which involves asking a series of questions to narrow down and prioritize tasks. The questions include:

  1. What's the one thing I can do such that by doing it, everything else will be easier or unnecessary?
  2. What's the one thing I can do right now that will help me achieve my goal?
  3. What's the one thing I can do today to make progress toward my goal?

The Domino Effect:

The key to success is figuring out the ONE most important thing in your business/career/life over the long run. Think of this as your “someday” goal. Once you’ve figured that out, you need to identify how many dominoes you need to line up - and then knock down - in order to achieve it. Simple right? … actually, yeah. It is. But just because it’s simple doesn’t mean it’s easy.

Gary Keller and Jay Papasan discuss six common lies that people believe about productivity and success. These lies are:
  1. Everything matters equally
  2. Multitasking is productive
  3. A disciplined life equals a restrictive life
  4. Willpower is always on will-call
  5. A balanced life is a successful life
  6. Big is bad

ICEBERGING & LIVING BY PRIORITY.

Every organization wants the two P’s - Productivity and Profit, but most organizations haven’t got a clue that there are two additional P’s that come first, and serve as the foundation for the second two. Those two P’s are Purpose and Priority.

Living a Domino run

SOMEDAY GOAL: what’s the ONE thing I want to do someday?

FIVE-YEAR GOAL: Based on my Someday Goal, what’s the ONE thing I can do in the next 5 years?

ONE-YEAR GOAL: Based on my Five-Year Goal, what’s the ONE thing I can do in this year?

MONTHLY GOAL: Based on my One-Year Goal, what’s the ONE thing I can do this month?

WEEKLY GOAL: Based on my Monthly Goal, what’s the ONE thing I can do this week?

DAILY GOAL: Based on my Weekly Goal, what’s the ONE thing I can do today?

RIGHT NOW: Based on my Daily Goal, what’s the ONE thing I can do right now?

TIME-BLOCKING, MASTERY, AND ACCOUNTABILITY.

Michelangelo once said, “If the people knew how hard I had to work to gain my mastery, it wouldn’t seem wonderful at all.”

The book also explores the concept of time blocking, which involves scheduling uninterrupted time for important tasks. The authors argue that by focusing on one thing during a designated time block, individuals can achieve more in less time.

THE FOUR THIEVES OF PRODUCTIVITY (AVOID THEM AT ALL COSTS.)

“One-half of knowing what you want is knowing what you must give up before you get it.”

  1. Inability to Say “No”
  2. Fear of Chaos
  3. Poor Health Habits
  4. Environment Doesn’t Support Your Goals

The book provides insights on how to develop habits and a mindset that can support the pursuit of one's goals. This includes cultivating discipline, prioritizing rest and renewal, and developing a growth mindset.

Overall, "The One Thing" is a practical guide that offers a fresh perspective on how to achieve success in a world full of distractions. By focusing on one thing and avoiding multitasking, individuals can accomplish extraordinary results and lead more fulfilling life.
